The Level 3 Certificate in Assessing Vocational Achievement Award replaced the A1 Assessor Award. These revised standards are designed to reflect the requirements of Assessors in all occupational sectors, and are the benchmark of good practice in the assessment of NVQ qualifications and have been updated in-line with the new QCF framework.This qualification is for candidates who need to be qualified in all aspects of assessment. Specifically, it is for those who assess occupational competence both in the work environment and vocational skills, knowledge and understanding outside of the workplace (e.g. in a workshop, classroom or other training environment). The qualification is transferable to any sector candidates have occupational competence in and provides a national benchmark of good practice for England.

The Level 3 Award in Assessing Vocational Achievement is a practical-based qualification intended for those who assess both occupational competence in the work environment and vocational skills, knowledge and understanding in environments other than the workplace (i.e. workshop, classroom or other training environment).The purpose of this qualification is to provide the candidate with the skills, knowledge, and understanding to assess occupational competence in the work environment as well as assessing vocationally related achievement in environments other than the workplace (i.e., a workshop, classroom or other training environment).

The Level 3 Award in Assessing Competence in the Work Environment is for practitioners who assess the demonstration of competence in a work environment using the following assessment methods: observation, examining work products, oral questioning and discussion, use of others (e.g. witnesses), learners statements and Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL).This qualification consists of one theory unit which assesses a candidate’s knowledge of the principles and practices of assessment and one practical unit which assesses a candidate assessor’s competence in assessing the occupational competence of others. Primary evidence for the learning outcomes must come from the candidate assessor assessing two real learners on two occasions in a real work environment against approved standards/criteria. These assessments will be observed.
